•TREATMENT

Our Substance Abuse Treatment Program includes individualized treatment to meet the client’s needs. Although the primary focus is on the client’s substance abuse issues, other emotional and behavioral issues (co-occurring disorders) are also addressed utilizing a holistic approach. Treatment includes individual counseling, group therapy, equine assisted psychotherapy and family counseling (when there is a family) using the Tulsa Boys’ Home Relationship Healing Model.  In addition, the client’s treatment includes the Change Companies Journals endorsed by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, self-help support group meetings (e.g. NA and AA) and a Positive Peer Culture.

•EQUINE ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY

Our Equine Program brings retired thoroughbred race horses to Tulsa Boys’ Home through the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation. Therapists use the horses as a tool for Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP), and are trained in the EAGALA Model of EAP (EAGALA is an abbreviation for Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association). Residents benefit from the responsibility, trust, self-discipline, and communication skills they learn from their relationships with the horses, and are also taught equine care and horse safety as part of their overall horsemanship training.

•PHILOSOPHY

Our philosophy includes the belief that alcohol and other drug addictions are an illness/disease that is primary, progressive and potentially fatal.  We view chemical dependency as an illness that affects every aspect of the individual’s life as well as their families. We utilize the most current and up to date best practices in treating adolescent substance abuse disorders, as well as any associated underlying mental or emotional issues.

FUNDING

The Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Program at Tulsa Boys’ Home is funded primarily by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, as well as through private donations and client fees.
